It was a quarter century ago when the doors of the 32nd Tokyo Motor Show opened in October 1997 with the slogan “One World. One People. One Show.” People were pushing and shoving their way in, to feast their eyes on the cars of the near future and the concepts that showed them which way the car design is headed.
European brands were showing off the brand new Mercedes Maybach, Volkswagen W12, and many other luxurious cars, however, Mazda brought something totally different. Mazda decided to premier the second generation of the very popular roadster named MX-5 Miata engineering a vast amount of changes to follow the same philosophy of a lightweight car with incredible performance for its class.
The first thing that everybody asked about were the popular pop-up headlights which had to be replaced to keep pedestrians around the world safer. This however did not mean that the design of the car was a failure, on the contrary, the brand new Mazda MX-5 Miata was a beautiful thing to behold.
It was designed by Tsutomu Matano AKA Tom Matano, a Japanese automotive journalist and designer who has been praised for his work on this model. The rest of the car featured improvements on every corner while managing to keep the weight low and show everybody that the lightness is still the best recipe for ultimate fun behind the wheel.
Sitting high on the throne that the Mazda MX-5 NA had built, the NB model had much to prove and it did the job perfectly, as people at the Tokyo Show were showing interest in how to pre-order the second NB generation of MX-5 which was coming out in February 1988.
